We Can’t Host National Schools Sports Festival Now – Delta State Government
The plan by Nigeria Schools Sports Federation (NSSF) to stage the 5th National Schools Sports Festival later this year, has suffered another setback as Delta has rejected the hosting right for the games.
The NSSF had proposed, Oct. 11 to Oct. 21 for the event.
Prof. Patrick Muoboghare, Delta Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, told reporters in Asaba that the state was rejecting the offer because of paucity of funds.
He said that there was no previous agreement between NSSF and the state on the matter, stressing that there was no provision for such sponsorship in the state’s 2012 budget.
According to him, the notice given to the state to host the games is short and not sufficient enough to consult the governor for approval.
“They can’t impose it on us after Rivers had rejected the hosting rights. Before such thing can be done in Delta, the governor’s attention must be drawn to it convincingly and it ought to have been provided for in the budget,” he said.
Reports has it that NSSF had, in a letter dated June 2, signed by Mrs Olabisi Joseph, Secretary General, announced that it had granted the hosting right for the festival to Delta to be staged later in the year.
Muoboghare, in his response via a July 13 letter to the NSSF, said the notice given to the state was short and that no budgetary provision was made for it in 2012.
The federation had initially awarded the hosting right to Rivers, which later turned it down.
